A Zambia pastor came to me and handed me a letter addressed to me from his church. The letter read:
To The missionary of Come Go With Us ministry. This letter serves as a note for the payment of 70,000 Kwacha to support your ministry. We hope and trust that this amount will go a long way in supporting your ministry travel expenses.
You have to understand the 3rd world mission field to appreciate just how special this letter was. Here, the missionary is looked at as the source of almost everything…food, clothing, spiritual/biblical teaching, etc…The hand is always out for something from the missionary…from the man on the street to pastors and churches. It represents very difficult waters to navigate. To see this church make this decision…to go “against the grain”…to step out in faith. I was reminded of the story of the “Widows Mite”…and encouraged that this fellowship has been able to grasp the concept of true missions…in that they too, are missionaries…as we all are. Matthew 28:19 was not just for the white man or the western Christian…but for all of us…black or white…rich or poor!
Last month, I was invited to preach at that church. I prayed about what to speak on and I came up with “Obedience”. I used as an example “a certain Zambian church” who decided to break out of the mold…to be “Obedient” to the Holy Spirit nudging them to make this donation… and be the supporters of this ministry - rather than the recipients. I told about how they had made the bold and unfamiliar decision to donate 70,000 Kwacha to the ministry of Come Go With Us…how they showed “Obedience” in making that decision. It was not too long into the sermon that they began to realize I was talking about them. Then I spoke about how I had been so moved by this that I had communicated this act of “Obedience” to my friends in America.
The next part was priceless! I then spoke of how someone in America felt the hand of God upon them and how God had prompted this person to take another unusual step…To be “Obedient” to God’s calling to make a donation to this church in Zambia. When I told them that there was a person in America who wanted to provide for the foundation of their new church, they all went “nutz”. What an object lesson. How cool was it that they could learn the lesson of “Obedience” in such a way that none of them could ever forget it. They made a 70,000 Kwacha donation by faith as a result of their “Obedience” to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. They were then, blessed with 1.5 Million Kwacha (about $300 USD) in return. What a day it was. It was such a joy to share this with them and to see it sink in in such dramatic fashion.
God wanted the lesson of “Obedience” to be taught and to be learned “COMPLETELY”. I am convinced the people of that church “Got It”.
Come Go With Us came to us as a concept when we began to put a name to this ministry. This story represents exactly what we envisioned. We are here on the mission field at God’s calling…and we are inviting others to join with us. As I spoke to that church, I was not standing there alone… I felt God’s presence and I felt the presence of the person who sent in the donation - as well as all those who are part of come Go With Us. I could not have told this story without that person…and I could not have taught a convincing lesson on Obedience without that person being obedient. God used us ALL…our supporters who help pave the way…those who are praying…and those who are answering the call to be “Obedient” to help further God’s work.
Sometimes, you just have to sit back and say…………WOW!
I woke up one day and discovered God wanted me to quit what I was doing for me...and start doing something for Him.
